Consensus on "the right person" to cold email

I will be looking at MMs for fulltime recruiting and will be cold emailing higher ups soon. From reading various threads on here, it seems like Associates are more likely to respond, and VPs would be the next choice. I will send some emails to MDs, though I know the response rate will be very low. Do associates give referrals in the hiring process? Also, do VPs travel a lot? Of course I am hoping to conversate and work my way into an interview, so I am just curious if they have influence.

Unfortunately there's no "consensus." I've literally had luck with Analysts, Associates and MDs.

IMO I've had the best luck with Analysts because sometimes they can closely relate or some are still in the stage where they are open to helping someone out. All of the Analysts I've spoken with have been able to put my hat into the ring for hiring when applicable.

I think it's best to start at the analyst level, as the recruiting process is still pretty fresh on their mind and thus they are more likely to empathize with college kids trying to hustle.

This. Don't try to play the percentages because there are no percentages to play. It's a crapshoot.
