Continuing to Network

Hey everyone, I've recently accepted an SA offer at a top MM and am at least somewhat interested in going through FT recruiting next year. I believe that one of my problems with last year's recruiting is that I didn't make strong enough connections, and didn't know how to follow up to maintain the relationships. How does one go about improving upon relationships that are mediocre and/or networking with new professionals this far in advance of my junior year SA? Also I could use any tips on keeping up relationships after an initial call. Thanks!
