Corporate Banking Associate Exits
What are the best CB exits you guys have seen at the associate level?
I know other banks, IBD, treasury are common responses but want to see if people have seen any other interesting exits from a corporate banking associate.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some notable exit opportunities for Corporate Banking (CB) associates:
Investment Banking (IBD): Transitioning to IB is a common move, especially for those who have built strong relationships with industry coverage or capital markets teams. However, note that prior CB experience may sometimes be discounted when making this lateral move.
Treasury Roles: Many associates exit to corporate treasury positions, where they can leverage their understanding of capital structure, risk management, and cash flow analysis.
Debt Investing: This includes roles in private credit funds, CLOs, mezzanine funds, and other credit-related investing opportunities. CB associates often have strong exposure to the syndicated loan market, making this a natural fit.
Corporate Development: Some associates move into corporate development roles, focusing on M&A and strategic initiatives for corporations.
Management Consulting: While less common, some CB associates have transitioned into consulting roles, particularly in firms that value their financial analysis and deal structuring experience.
Infrastructure Funds or Insurers: CB associates with experience in three-statement projection models and debt capacity analysis may find opportunities in infrastructure funds or the investment management arms of insurance companies.
Middle-Market Private Equity (PE): Although rare, there have been cases of CB associates moving into middle-market PE roles, especially if they have strong deal experience and networking skills.
Lateral Moves Within the Bank: Associates often transition to other groups within the bank, such as leveraged finance (LevFin), financial sponsors, or syndications.
Business School (MBA): Pursuing an MBA is a popular route for career changers, opening doors to a broader range of opportunities, including PE, consulting, or strategy roles.
Relaxed High-Earning Roles: Some associates choose to stay in CB, enjoying a more balanced lifestyle while still earning competitive compensation (e.g., $500k+ at senior levels).
These exits highlight the versatility of CB experience, but success often depends on networking, skill development, and aligning your career goals with the right opportunities.
