Corporate Banking (CIB) London

Hi folks,

as in the title - could you please share your thoughts about Corporate Banking scene in London? I am mostly curious about shops where CB is under CIB umbrella - so mostly BBs + large balance sheet Euro and Asian banks.

I would love to know something more about best players on the market, dealflow, duties, career progressions, salaries & bonuses by ranks etc. - any inside info highly appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about Corporate Banking (CIB) in London:

  1. Best Players on the Market:

    • The top corporate banks globally, which also have a strong presence in London, include JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Citi. These are followed by Wells Fargo, HSBC, Barclays, and other large balance sheet players like MUFG, Santander, and Credit Suisse.
    • European and Asian banks with significant balance sheets also play a role, such as BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, and Mizuho.
  2. Dealflow:

    • Corporate Banking under the CIB umbrella typically focuses on large public clients, offering products like loans, revolvers, term loans, and other credit solutions. The dealflow is often tied to credit products and treasury services, with some overlap into investment banking products like debt capital markets (DCM) and leveraged finance (LevFin).
  3. Duties:

    • Analysts and associates in Corporate Banking are responsible for financial analysis, credit underwriting, and relationship management. The role involves understanding businesses fundamentally, structuring loans, and managing risk. There’s also a focus on fostering long-term client relationships rather than purely transactional work.
  4. Career Progression:

    • Career progression in Corporate Banking is generally more stable compared to Investment Banking. There’s less of a "2 and out" culture, and professionals can grow into senior relationship management roles or transition into other areas like DCM, LevFin, or even Investment Banking.
  5. Salaries & Bonuses:

    • Compensation for Corporate Banking analysts under the CIB structure is comparable to Investment Banking but with a ~20% haircut. For example, if max IB comp is $250,000, max CB comp might be $200,000. Bonuses are typically lower, with IB bonuses ranging from 70-90% of base, while CB bonuses are around 40-50% of base. Hours are generally better, averaging 60-70 per week, though they can spike during live deals.
