It happens, but I've been told I have a strong resume and have gotten a 0% response rate through only online applications and no networking.
Same here. Never heard of anyone getting a response through this.
is this question just for IBD only or any FO?

i know of it happening anecdotally, but it's a rare occurence.
I had no luck w/IBD, but I did score a McKinsey interview through general application via website.
Extremely unlikely, though it does happen. Why wouldn't you couple website drops with some networking to improve your chances?
I've gotten phone interviews with JPM twice and 1 GS, non IBD, by applying straight online. Know a kid who got a Citi IBD FT offer from resume drop online. Having said that, it is rare.
I got 0 responses from all my online drops for ib. Got interviews with bain and bcg through the website tho.
I got a superday invite (no phone interview) for an IBD SA position at a major BB (GS/JPM/MS) from a non-target state school through the online application portal. No networking at all. However, I didn't get interviews from every single other bank I applied to...so it's definitely a rare occurrence.
Got interviews with Harris Williams and Lazard from just applying online. Definitely possible.

I know an analyst at Greenhill that landed an offer through a no-networking, online drop.
I attended an MBA in Asia (obviously not top 10) and got a Goldman + Citi Summer Associate for PB and sales and CS PB associate online using the same CV. I was pretty surprised given that I don't speak Mandarin (I only speak English). I didn't get an offer from them but got an ER internship at another bank (not through website).
I know someone who got a top BB SA phone interview this way. Was not for NYC but probably their 2nd/3rd best office. In his online application he listed NYC as his first location and this city as his 2nd since he was from there he figured what the hell.
This is interesting because in Europe, it's the exact opposite. Not only is OCR very rare (if even existing at all in my country), but if you for example manage to figure out the email structure of a MM or BB and have the audacity to email them, you will likely get the reply "please look out on our website for internship postings..."
I.e. everything is done through corporate website applications.
Yet another reason Europe is a shitshow.
