Customizing cover letters

How the hell are you supposed to customize the cover letters towards specific banks? For Goldman, it's easier: I want to work at the best of the best, but what about at the other banks? The truth is that I went to work at a BB because of the exit opportunities, but those aren't specific to any one bank. Seriously, what is the difference between Citigroup and JPM, except the fact that Citigroup is full of slightly less a-holes? I don't think that would sound good in a cover letter. Are these letters supposed to be generic, or should I just find something absurdly specific to point out about the individual banks I'm applying to?

Just talk about which group at Citigroup you are interested in and why? If itsjust IB in general (i.e. you are not sure about your group and just want to go for IB), then talk about the cases where one firm has an edge over the other.

For example, for citigroup you can just talk about its global presence which is bigger than most of the banks, or the fact that it has been in the industry longer than some of the others...

Is it suffice to say that around 3-4 sentences outlining the specific reasons you want to work for a certain BB is enough customization? Im thinking first paragraph introduce yourself and why you want to work there (ie global presence etc) and then 2nd and 3rd, are personal reflections/achievements etc

Suggestions? Any concrete examples on how to customize?

Has anyone landed an interview through coldemailing without attaching a cover letter?
