Preparation eliminates nervousness. Don’t overthink it either. Keep yourself busy until you NEED to focus on the interview (if online, like 5-10mins; if in-person, only when you’re on-site)
You need to adopt a “I don’t give a fuck attitude”
You just try your best. If they like you, then they like you. If they don’t, then it’s not the end of the world cause there are hundreds of roles in finance you can do.
I was told that I was competent, and my technicals were good and that I knew my shit but I was just way too nervous. It sucks because I was told that the people that moved ahead of me weren’t any better on paper but performed better on that side. It sucks because you can be so close, do decently well on techs but nervousness will always be held against you in this business. I want this to change asap.
You’ll get better naturally with reps dude, no need to be so hard on yourself
When I started interviewing sophomore year I struggled with this all the time, even missed out on a few offers because of it. What I learned is to prepare as best I can to eliminate anxiety.
Preparing for me meant technical, behavioral, and understanding how to respond a question that I don’t know the answer to. I’ve also learned to utilize my network before every call and ask about the interview process / style, and the interviewer if possible.
Another way you can utilize your network is find some associates / VPs who’re willing to go through mock interviews with you.
Most importantly, before every interview I take a 10 minute walk and don’t think about finance at all. I remind myself why I’m here, where I came from, and to be confident.
Hope this helps.
