Derivatives Structuring / Career Advice

Hi folks, this is my first post on WSO. I am in my early thirties. I spent the last 6 years structuring derivatives, and would be curious to hear your opinion about the industry's outlook.

The pay is structuring is still appealing but for how long ? The horizon is definitely cloudy with regular layoff announcements, especially in my field, the job has become increasingly tedious (mostly because of increased regulation and less appetite for innovation).

The older I get the more difficult it will become for me to switch career. I am worried of becoming stuck a few years down the road ..

One option would be to transition now to a role in data science, where the demand doesn't seem to stop : lower pay but better career prospects.

How would you value the NPV of both propositions ?

I don't think there are many on this forum that have more experience than you do, so you are probably in the best situation to make such judgement.

Do you have the technical skills required to go into data science? Otherwise I'd stick with structuring for a few year to see whether or not the situation improves. I've seen a few VP/MD in structuring moving to Asia tho, the demand for innovation is not there yet, but it is a worthwhile decision to consider.

I've heard, for example, there are lots of investors in Taiwan with buck load of money, and they love their FX structured products.
