Difficulty of Lateraling from Middle Market to Bulge Bracket

Hello,

Right now I am a sophomore with a 3.66 GPA who goes to a target school recruiting for 2025 cycle and dream of working at a Bulge bracket. However, I'm aware BBs are ridiculously difficult to get into right out of college and I don't yet think my resume is competitive enough in comparison to others.

I plan to somehow break into an MM and then lateral. What is the difficulty to lateral from a MM to a BB? If someone has a rough acceptance rate estimate that would be great.

Ah, the classic journey from the middle market to the big leagues of Bulge Brackets! Here's the scoop based on the most helpful WSO content:

  • Competition: It's fierce, no monkeying around here. BBs are the top bananas in the finance world, and they attract a lot of talent. But don't let that intimidate you; with a target school on your resume and a solid GPA, you're in the game.

  • Key Obstacles: The main hurdles include standing out among a sea of applicants, networking effectively, and ensuring your technical skills are sharp as a tack. You'll need to be able to demonstrate that you can handle the heat in the BB kitchen.

  • Lateral Movement: It's not uncommon, but it's not a walk in the park either. From the WSO threads, it seems that having solid M&A experience and modeling skills can make you a more attractive candidate for a lateral move.

  • Acceptance Rate: As for a rough acceptance rate, that's a tough banana to peel. It varies widely depending on a multitude of factors, including market conditions, your own experience, and the BB's needs at the time.

  • Strategy: Start building relationships early. Networking is key. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and maybe even try to snag an internship at an MM to get your foot in the door.

Remember, every journey starts with a single step, even if it's a step to a smaller firm first. Keep swinging from vine to vine, and you'll get there!
