Director vs MD Comp Diff
Hey all just curious about how big the comp bump is from director to MD?
Have heard MDs can make double director ($700k for director to $1-2m at MD) - is that true?

Career Resources
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the compensation difference between Directors and MDs in investment banking can be significant, but it varies depending on the bank (Bulge Bracket vs. Elite Boutique), location, and individual performance.
Director Compensation: Directors typically earn a base salary in the range of $350k–$400k, with bonuses that can bring total compensation to around $700k or slightly higher. However, Directors often face a plateau in their career if they don't transition to MD, as they are expected to start generating revenue.
MD Compensation: MDs generally see a substantial increase in total compensation. Base salaries for MDs are similar to Directors ($350k–$400k), but the bonus structure is where the real difference lies. Total compensation for MDs can range from $1M to $2M+ depending on performance, seniority, and the firm's structure. At Elite Boutiques, the upside can be even higher due to smaller teams and higher revenue-sharing potential, but this comes with more variability.
Key Factors:
In summary, the jump from Director to MD can indeed double or even triple total compensation, but it heavily depends on the individual's ability to bring in revenue and the firm's compensation structure.

There are plenty of senior directors that clear $1m, which can be more than some junior MDs are getting paid if they didn’t have a good year. Generally, I’ve seen senior directors and junior MDs have about a $300k comp difference. The gap widens significantly as an MD becomes more senior.
Also, keep in mind that the MD title is different at different firms. For example, junior MDs at GS and Evercore are more equivalent to Directors at places like MS and JPM.
