Discussing Transition to IB with my Manager

Long time listener first time caller. I am currently a first year analyst in a rotational program at a large regional bank with a decent MM IB presence. My program is in the finance department of this bank, and does not have any direct exposure to capital markets outside of a few adjacent rotations.

I would like to make the transition to the capital markets side of my bank, and have spent the last few months preparing my resume, networking, and doing some relevant activity on the side (studying for the SIE, studying modeling and security analysis, etc.) I have also done well in my current role, worked extra hours, turned in assignments timely and accurately, and have been involved in all social events outside of work. This was all reflected in an extremely positive performance reciew with my manager earlier this month.

The big issue is that transitioning to IB is not the traditional path out of my program. It is not unheard of, but it has not happened recently and I am definitely the only person currently in the program who will attempt to do it. I plan on completing my program and starting in a new role in summer 2025, so finishing the program up is not an issue. My question to any of you is have you been in a similar position? If so, how did you discuss the change with your manager and how did they react? Are there any sort of unwritten rules that I should be aware of before discussing a career trajectory change with my manager?
