Do I really need to network

Target with very good internship experience and good grades, have had 20+ chats already but they feel like a huge waste of time. Do I really need to make both parties suffer by talking to random alumni on the phone to get an interview?

No. But you probably won't get the job either. IB isn't really an intellectually demanding role, so the technical tests they can ask are really limited, meaning they don't have much to filter applicants on. So, they filter based on who the teams know, and networking is how you do that.

Interesting, I’ve always heard that networking is to only get a first round and after that you’re in the fire by yourself. No problem cold networking, just think time can be better spent.
