Do M&A stars still exist ?
Hey,
There used to be a time when some MDs would be even more famous than their CEOs (Quattrone, Jimmy Lee, Chertok, Wasserstein...), even non-finance people would know their name and there would be articles about them in the newspapers, but I don't know if those M&A stars still exist ?
Do you know famous names that are interesting to follow and keep track of the deals they make ?
Can't wait to read about them :)
IMO modern MDS are just as competent as those names listed - it’s just that they were an anomaly in decades past.
Not to that extend but definitely interesting in Europe (DACH) Dietrich Becker, Johannes Groeller and for Restructuring Max Mayer Eming
Why? Met one of those a few times and wasn’t obvious so just interested
Had a pretty positive image of all three, genuinely smart and willing to support juniors in any instance and especially the PJT guys are absolute machines when it comes to deal making in their respective fields at least that is my impression. Do you care to elaborate a bit more on why you don't agree with one of them? curious

Dude is a legend
Since you mention Frank Quattrone, it’s probably worth mentioning that in the eyes of many people (especially in tech), George Boutros is the best investment banker in the world currently.
what's Boutros' net worth
Not like I or anyone on this site would know exactly but it has to be in the low to mid single digit billions if you consider the insane amounts he and Frank made at MS, and how successful Qatalyst is
I remember seeing this thread pretty recently that's basically the answer to your question: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/the-titans-of-…
One of the alumni I'm close with interacts often with a heavy hitter from CVP through his corp dev group. Any WSJ headline type of deal these past few months in his subvertical within the industry, his MD contact was on the deal team. Wouldn't be surprised if this guy is pulling $10M+ this year and last.
In terms of resources to see who the heavy hitters are? Depends on the industry. Pretty sure there is a 40 under 40 list for sports & entertainment and a few bankers / lawyers showed up on it (if I remember correctly, forgot the resource but a few homegrown Raine partners were on there).
Lol makes way, way more than $10m/year. Average revenue per partner would suggest many are making over that and several far more.
Yeah I have no clue but super impressive deal list (even sold a company I used to work for - multibillion dollar sale).
Steve McLaughlin is probably on the modern list - say what you will about FT Partners, but it is incredibly impressive what he built ($600M revenue in 2021!) especially without giving away any equity.
There’s a great WSJ or NYT article about him. He’s made some brilliant decisions by taking fees in equity.
