Do Summer Assoc programs generally hire JD candidates?
Genuine question - trying to do some future planning here. Thinking of getting a law degree to further my own education and maybe practice in the future, just not entirely sure
Was wondering if banks hire JD candidates for their summer associate programs rather than the normal MBA candidates - also wondering if the idea of a JD candidate going (back) into banking would hurt their chances relative to the normal path
I've seen it in a few job posts but have no knowledge on how postbac recruiting works. I'm an An1 at a MM rn for reference
Based on the most helpful WSO content, JD candidates are not the primary target for Summer Associate programs, which are traditionally geared toward MBA candidates. However, there are exceptions. Some banks do consider JD candidates, especially if they have a strong interest in banking and can articulate a compelling story about why they are transitioning from law to finance.
Here are a few key points to consider:
Preference for MBA Candidates: Summer Associate programs are structured around MBA recruiting, as banks view MBA candidates as having the business acumen and leadership skills they seek. JD candidates may face an uphill battle unless they can demonstrate equivalent qualifications.
Compelling Story Matters: Banks are cautious about candidates who might not be fully committed to banking. If you're a JD candidate, you'll need to clearly explain why you're pursuing banking over law and how your legal background adds value to the role.
Cultural Fit and Long-Term Potential: Banks look for candidates they can envision as future MDs. If you can show that your JD background enhances your ability to work in banking (e.g., expertise in M&A contracts, regulatory knowledge), it could work in your favor.
Networking is Key: JD candidates often need to rely heavily on networking to get their foot in the door. Informational interviews and connections with bankers who have a similar background can help bridge the gap.
Niche Opportunities: Some groups, like restructuring or legal-heavy areas of banking, may value a JD more than others. Highlighting your expertise in these areas could improve your chances.
While it's not the traditional path, it’s not impossible. If you’re serious about this route, focus on building a strong narrative, networking aggressively, and targeting banks or groups that value your unique skill set.
