Does anyone have any advice on how to answer the question “what industry group are you interested in?”

I am trying to build my story before I start networking but I truly don’t have a preference so it’s hard…

Any ideas on how to answer this from someone in the industry? I know I have to look at common valuation metrics for the industry that I am “interested in” I just don’t want to accidentally say an industry sector that nobody wants to be in.

A sample answer would be amazing to build a framework around. I can then personalize it form there.

Thanks everyone Aro

Honestly, it's one of those questions that will differ drastically from person to person. There isn't really a sample answer/right answer because every answer will be based on personal interests and experiences. If I were you, I would research two or three groups that you would be most excited to work in. Think about what you want to do after banking, what interests you (when you read the news or about deals, which industry catches your eye most), etc.

It doesn't matter what industry sector that nobody wants to be in, but rather which industry YOU want to be in.

The answer will differ drastically like someone wants to do O&G because they studied petroleum engineering, or someone was the head of the Consumer Retail group of their school's investment club or they want to get experience in all industries which is which they want to do a generalist/product group (I'm generalizing of course). I've heard a story where someone's dad was a doctor and they spent a lot of time in hospitals and because of that, they were interested in the healthcare industry. It doesn't have to be that personal but you get the point.

These answers are usually really quick and straight to the point. Don't drag it out too much.

Hopes this helps!
