Currently at a retail focused shop, understanding store economics (sales per square foot, average transactions per month * average cart size) is big as our models are often built up by calculating the economics of each store.

It’s a very straightforward way of thinking, the only technical I could imagine is them asking you to walk them through a revenue build

Oh I see, are there any places where you would recommend as a good place to learn this stuff? I’d like to be prepared on retail related technicals and fully understand the sector

Tbh I just learned on the job, but it’s relatively straightforward thinking. Go build a practice model to test it out.

Revenue:
Average monthly transactions * average cart size

Adjust for seasonalities (i.e. if you have monthly data you’ll see sales pick up in november before Christmas)

Expenses:
Point of sale systems, BRINKS trucks, rent (when does their lease expire, can they renew for the same rate?), employees, wholesaler costs, etc.

I’m sure you could find info online, but just knowing normal technicals was enough for me—not saying you’ll have the same experience though.

Best of luck!
