Matters less and less over time but totally still matters somewhat for asso + post associate PE and hf recruiting. I assume once you have an actual track record doesn’t matter at all.

A good GPA doesn’t necessarily mean you’re smarter than someone else, but it is generally correlated with being disciplined, capable of learning, and able to perform consistently under pressure. Using IB as an example bc that’s the line of work we’re in, you’re constantly learning new concepts and expected to pick things up quickly, that can translate into better opportunities (shifting laterally or existing eventually to an operating role or PE/VC) and make it easier to get your foot in the door.

Obviously, the older you get and the further you progress in your career, the less your GPA matters. Your actual deal experience and track record start speaking for themselves. But I think the underlying principle still matters regardless of what field you’re in, doing well academically shows that you’re capable of dedicating the time and effort necessary to learn and master whatever is put in front of you. Even if what you’re learning has nothing to do with what you ultimately want to do, say chemistry for someone who wants to work in finance, it isn’t necessarily pointless. The subject itself may never be relevant, but proving that you can sit down, dedicate the time, understand something difficult, and become proficient at it demonstrates a broader ability to learn and adapt. That is valuable in virtually any line of work.
