Does Master's grade matter?
For context am a student at MIT/Oxford/Princeton flagship masters in finance programmes and the workload is insane so I'm fairly sure I won't get the best GPA/Grade but I will get the minimum required to take up my BB offer.
Question is, will my masters grade matter later for PE/HF recruiting? I graduated with the equivalent of a 4.0 GPA from my undergrad at a target school.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your master's grades may matter, but not as much as your undergraduate GPA, especially since you already have a stellar 4.0 GPA from a target school. Here's what you need to know:
Headhunters and Initial Screening: Headhunters often use GPA as a quick filter during the initial screening process. While your undergraduate GPA will likely carry more weight, a poor master's GPA could raise questions, especially if it's significantly below expectations for someone with your background.
PE/HF Recruiting: For private equity and hedge fund recruiting, the focus tends to shift more towards your deal experience, technical skills, and networking. However, if your master's GPA is noticeably low, it might require you to "sell yourself" more during the process. This means leveraging your network, securing strong recommendations, and showcasing your practical experience.
Workload and Context: If the workload at your master's program is particularly intense, this is something you can address during interviews. Recruiters and interviewers are often aware of the rigor of programs like those at MIT, Oxford, or Princeton, and they may take this into account.
Long-Term Impact: While your master's GPA might not be a dealbreaker, it could have some influence on your MBA applications or other future academic pursuits. However, your strong undergraduate GPA and professional experience will likely outweigh a less-than-perfect master's GPA.
In summary, while your master's grades do matter to some extent, they are not the sole determinant for PE/HF recruiting. Focus on maintaining the minimum required GPA, excelling in your BB role, and building a strong network to mitigate any concerns.
