Epiphany? Na not really.

One of my co-workers has been on vacation and was called into work today.

I've seen this happen plenty of times and have had this happen to me a few times.

We're like doctors except we don't do anything important.

I was called on for what turned out to be a 3 hours conference call while on a tropical island.... one of the SR VP's was forced to cancel a Mediterranean vacation (firm reimbursed his expenses, doubt they reimbursed the abuse he must have gotten from his wife), and another VP was on vacation and ended up having to put in a full 2 days of work from wherever he was... he expensed ~30% of his vacation to the firm as well.

I guess thats why we get paid what we do. We could work at Abercrombie & Fitch corporate offices or as financial advisers at Edward Jones or some other horse shit job and take a 2 week vacation and not be bothered... but that 50K all in comp just doesn't do it for me. No matter how blissful a vacation I get, its not going to get me a black card within 5 years, and its not going allow me to smirk at all the mediocre peasants I pass on the street every day.

Reminds me of a scene from Entourage:

(Ari, at his kid's birthday party. The Phone rings and he's gotta go)

Mrs. Ari: Where do you think you're going?!

Ari: They just flew in the heart, baby. I've got to do the transplant. Where the fuck do you think I'm going?!

Mrs. Ari: You'd better be back before they cut the cake, or else.

Ari:...oh....ok.

dentyne13is it true that the top traders get paid more than the top bankers?

Yep. Well, before the economy went sh**, bonuses went down, and more regulations were slapped on. The top traders make astronomical amounts of money - more than top bankers while working less hours.

I was on vacation on the island of Moorea (Tahiti) in late 1998. I was a commodities trader at the time, and this was just at the beginning of crude oil's massive run.

So I'm lounging around at the resort bar when I hear through a transistor radio that we've just launched a major airstrike against Iraq. These airstrikes came fairly regularly, and were always good for a nice pop in the price of crude.

Needless to say, in 1998 the Tahitians thought the Internet was something you used to catch fish. And in typical French style (Tahiti is a French outpost), the French press went on strike to protest the attack. That meant no news in or out of the islands. The only international pay phone was at the island's post office, and because of the time difference, the post office was closed while the market was open.

When I got back, all my buddies were loving it because they made a quick bundle on the unrest. In today's world of Crackberries, this probably wouldn't have happened. But back in the Dark Ages of the late '90s, I was shit out of luck.
