Equity Research vs IBD - for Hedge Fund exit opportunities
I know IB tends to be better than equity research for private equity and corp development, but what about fundamental/merger arb/Long-short hedge funds -- are they comparable or does one trump the other?
Mmm, Einhorn started off in research. Prop research would probably be ideal for transitioning to a hedge fund, but that's just my take.
I'm pretty sure David started at DLJ

Depends on the type of hedge fund, as said above. For long/short I would say ER would be better than IBD, though.

What 2 year stint is better if i want to end up working and climbing my way up a hf, equities research or investment banking?
what kind of hf?
Which one would ib be good for versus er?
Unless you want to work for a risk arbitrage/merger arbitrage fund, you will probably have more and better doors open to you coming out of research. Naturally, if you're a successful trader, you would have even better opportunities, but that's a lot riskier than E/R, IBD, or quant development work.
How is plugging data into spreadsheets and making fancy powerpoint presentations supposed to get you into a Hedge Fund?...ER all the way brah.
You'd have to have a solid track record in ER whereas in IBD your track record isn't as apparent. I'd guess that ER would be more useful in most cases though.
On a side note, I find it pretty fucked up that the Unicorn Killer's bail was set at 40k and Raj Rajaratnam's was set at a 100 MM
