Escape Lease / Banking
in need of a friend. Has anyone here heard of any legitimate ways to get out of a lease in NYC. Believe my contract says I can't sublease. Trying to move to a LCOL city and switch jobs.

I would think it wouldn't be hard to sublet given the market.You could also join the military that breaks any lease haha
this is nyc. just stop paying rent. say you are a venezualan refugee (remember race is a construct), and the wonderful nyc government will likely pay your rent for you
when I had to move from Miami to SF for my new job, my new job gave me money to cover moving expenses which was enough to pay the lease termination fee, which was 2 months rent.
Thank you guys really helpful. I think they'll just find a way for collections to come after me if I don't pay, but I like the creativity.
Depending on how much time is left, maybe offer to pay 2-3 months of rent for them to let you break the lease if you can move out ASAP and they can put it on the market.
The vast majority of NYC leases will say that you cannot sublease, but let you do it if you ask. Just ask.
