Ethical? GPA? Deceptive?

Hi,

So my school runs on a 4.3 GPA scale. I have a 4.00. Would it be ethical to write just "• Cumulative GPA: 4.00" instead of "• Cumulative GPA: 4.00/4.3"? converting to 4.0 scale based on school's official guideline, my GPA would be 3.87/4.00...

So is it okay to write 4.00 GPA instead of 4.00/4.3 ?

Thanks!!!

No retard. Put 4.00/4.30 or 3.87/4.00. Putting 4.00 without specifying the scale is deceptive.

Think about it...you really think 3.87 or 4.0/4.3 is going to hurt you.

Solidaritylol you Michigan kids or is this Cornell

Why does it matter? Also it is incredibly mundane to generalize people based on their schools...don't you think so?

I think he's narrowed it down to those two schools because they (Well I know Michigan for sure, not positive on Cornell) grade on that scale. I'm not sure how many other schools do...

I wish I had your GPA sophmore year. I also wish I didn't go to a community college.

seedy underbellyGPA scales are necessary on a resume because they vary so much. MIT, for instance, has GPAs out of 5.0.

lol I don't understand why people on this site are so curious about where random posters go to school.

It's either that or asking about cock size...

Well what I want to do is give an impression that my school is at 4.0 - I could give that impression with Dean's Honour List and top 10% of class. yes? no?

Dude put a 3.87, or round up to a 3.9, or just do 4.00/4.30. Add your dean's honor list and top 10% of class. That will be more than enough and will still be impressive. Don't try to deceive anyone. They'll see your transcript anyway.

The correct answer is to put 3.9/4.0.

You would never put 4.00/4.3 because those are not equivalent in terms of significant figures. (If you don't think things like that matter, you will be a lousy banker.) Also, you wouldn't put 3.87/4.00 because rounding has been established as a resume "best practice" where applicable (i.e. when you can round up), making 3.9 better than 3.87.

Furthermore, the reason one would not write 4.0/4.3 instead of 3.9/4.0 is because as a percentage of perfection, 3.9/4.0 is more complete than 4.0/4.3. (That is to say, 3.9 is 97.5% of 4.0, while 4.0 is only 93.0% of 4.3.)

I agree with Nouveau. Ignore my 3.87 and 4.00/4.30 suggestions...but I still think that putting "Cumulative GPA: 4.0" is deceiving and wrong.

Agreed. I could see it being perceived as deceptive. For the potential risk of coming off as a weird/sketchy/scrupulous guy, the marginal payout really isn't there.

Thank you for all your comments guys, I think I'll just keep it at 4.0/4.3 since that's how my transcript displays it (well it displays it at 4.000/4.3 lol) but good call on the significant figures thing Riche, I didn't realise it before.

I think I am going to put up my revised resume for critique in a bit, to get more advice there. Thanks again for all your advice!

I'd write 3.87 for sure. I went to a super day and saw a kid get questioned on her 4.0, not because they didn't believe it, but because they wondered if she had a life outside of school.

I can't see how a 3.87 vs a 4.0 would make a difference. At that level of GPA, its all about the other stuff.

Goodluck!

street_secretsRoss allows a 4.3, the rest of UMich does not.

It was a 4.0 scale when I was there. The website seems to indicate it's still a 4.0 scale for BBA (MBA / MAcc don't have GPA's at all), just honors, etc.

Where are you guys getting this info?
