>Pretty sure they’re strictly execution for cross-border M&A, like JPM used to be.
Have no idea what mandates they’ve won (if any) or what they’ve worked on, and they’re a very small and lean team. I have heard (and experienced firsthand) that team members are generally cold and not responsive - I’m sure to lateral in you need a pre-existing relationship with a junior there.
I imagine exits are solid. It’s Evercore after all. However I would not have a ton of confidence the satellite office will survive long-term - US banks close satellites all the time and with a ton of other banks growing their presence in Canada with Evercore not following suit, might mean they don’t plan to (or they’re a bit behind the ball).
Edit: I realize I didn’t provide context on compensation / WLB. I have heard they sweat (and worked across them on a process and their associate didn’t look miserable, but close to it). Compensation would be excellent - think US EB pay but then converted to CAD, which with current Fx rates means A1s would be pulling in >$250K CAD and As1s >$500K CAD.
.
GS / MS are by far the best satellite shops in Toronto. MF exits are completely normal from both these shops.
Greenhill used to be strong in TO - after the aforementioned two offices, the next two strongest are probably JPM and then one of EVR / Barc with JEFF closely behind.
IMO UBS and BofA in Toronto are irrelevant.
They do run some in-house for juniors but again, they also source from the US counterparts. If we're simply speaking about Canadian teams, the BB's get best deal flow, specific teams in B5 (RBC PU&I, BMO M&M) get good flow as well. Exits within Canada would look like top pensions (CPP/OMERS/OTPP), ONEX, Atlas, Brook.
Have done chats with the juniors and the VP, they are a Toronto based team but work alongside the NYC teams. They are lean as the guy stated above, and the head MD is a polished dude IRL. They have guys who were not even finance/business grads - ENG/STEM. Might just have been my experience but can also agree with the comment above, about team-wise being cold. I know that an SA from the NYC lateraled to FT in the TOR office. Based on their open-house, they’ve commented about being a growing team, and looking to expand quarters within Canada - not sure how true that will be though.
.
Did you attend a target / know a junior previously?
I (and others) haven’t even gotten a response before from them.
Attending a semi. Would note that Ivey is probably the most targeted at least for TOR office - to my knowledge, they were the only ones where the juniors from the team actually held an in-person info session event. I was in the open-house and it gave me a chance to get face-to-face interactions with the team, and then leveraged that. Again, from the general looks of the team, I would say that their response level is minimal, unless you have a genuine opening with someone on the team/attend events - would say that opening contact without pre-existing connection is hard, can't tell if its just because its the nature of being at an EB, being a sweatshop, or just not a team that offers that external communication. I do also know a junior, but that connection was only after the events. Also, they seem like they don't act independently (most likely because its a satelite) and much of the flow/direction is all run based out of NY - events were all organized from the NY, it wasn't because the TOR office itself wanted to host these things.
