Exit Ops: Public Finance & Municipals IB

2nd year PubFin Analyst at a BB and I've started to think about exit options. What are some common exits for PubFin analysts who focused on "exit-friendly" sectors of municipals (i.e. transportation, heavy infrastructure, etc.)?

Particularly curious in LO AM, DCM, Infra PE, Private Credit, IR, and sell-side equity/credit research teams.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, common exit opportunities for Public Finance analysts, especially those who have focused on sectors like transportation and heavy infrastructure, can vary. Here are some of the paths that analysts in Public Finance have taken:

  • Long Only Asset Management (LO AM): Analysts with a background in Public Finance can transition to asset management firms, especially those that focus on municipal bonds or infrastructure investments.

  • Debt Capital Markets (DCM): A move to DCM is a natural transition for Public Finance analysts, given their experience with debt instruments and understanding of the fixed income market.

  • Infrastructure Private Equity (Infra PE): With a focus on heavy infrastructure, analysts may find opportunities in private equity firms that specialize in infrastructure investments.

  • Private Credit: Analysts might move into private credit funds, where their knowledge of credit analysis and structuring can be valuable.

  • Investor Relations (IR): Public Finance analysts can leverage their communication skills and understanding of financial markets in investor relations roles within corporations or financial institutions.

  • Sell-side Equity/Credit Research: Analysts can transition to equity or credit research roles, where they can use their analytical skills to evaluate companies and issuers for investors.

Remember, being proactive is key in securing these exit opportunities. Networking, reaching out to recruiters, and aligning your experience with the requirements of these roles can greatly enhance your chances of a successful transition.
