Explaining Lateral Move as an Analyst Post Banking

Hello WSO,

I finished my 2-year IB stint July of 2023 and thought I closed this site for good after reaching over 9k bananas and being just a few hundred away from "human" title but I'm back. Guess the "Almost Human" title is the piece bringing me here.

A little about me, as an analyst I moved from one BB to another after 5 months as my original group was weak and the new group was a top group at a top BB and finished the total 2-years. I then moved to corporate and was laid off after 5 months, essentially on my first day they told me they restructured the entire firm before I started and my role didn't exist so I spent 5 months with some responsibilities allocated from random teams. I then found a new job in 1-2 months and have been here since for 1-year now.

Very content with my job and very happy, however, I was testing the job market to make sure my interview skills were up to par (you never know in this market) and it seems like the lateral IB move is brought up in every interview as is the 5 month corporate stint. Even ex-bankers (mainly MBA associates) seem noticeably annoyed/angry when asking why I left BB1 as an analyst. They also ask about the corporate stint too which is an issue but is easier to explain.

Honestly a concern of mine for a long time just given the frequency in which it comes up in interviews. These 5-6 month stints are long enough that they need to be on my resume (only being 4 years out of college) yet they are definitely harming me in interviews or making it so I can't even get the interview. Eventually, I want to remove the other BB and keep just the top BB, however, I was only there for 1.5 years. What is the best way around this? And how can I best explain these 2 short job stints?

Honestly when I made the lateral move I thought people would understand why without even asking but even ex-bankers seem displeased with it.

I think the issue is you are interviewing yet again so they want to know why youve had 4 (now interviewing for 5) jobs in 4 years. I feel like if you stay at your current role for 4-5 years this will start to fade. The short stints dont look great, everybody has weaknesses on their resume and luckily you can easily explain one of them. But the fact your recruiting shows serious job hopper behavior in conjuction with this.
