Extending summer internship- possible?

Hi,

Going to start an IB summer internship with a BB in the S. hemisphere this Dec-Feb. I am contemplating taking the semester immediately following the internship off and traveling for what would be the second half of it, because I only need to do one out of two semesters next year to graduate. I will need to work for a bit before I travel- do banks extend summer internships under any circumstances, considering I'm not immediately going back to school? Would it be strange for me to ask if it's possible to stay on for an extra month or two?

Ideally I'd like to have the information as soon as possible, so I can kinda map out a timeline for my year/my plans. When would the best time be to ask? If my internship starts in December, should I wait till I've started to ask? That'd be my best guess.

Yes, I have seen interns at BB's having their summer programs extended assuming they were solid performers.

Have you contemplated finishing your semester off immediately after the summer, and then starting full-time 6-months early -- this can also be a good option if you want to extend your full-time program, while also vesting your bonus time period.

Yeah, that was my initial thought, but I think I'd rather skip that- I'm planning on volunteering in S.America for 2-3 months and I think it'd be a great experience that I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to do again, if I don't do it now. I'd rather do that than an extra 6 months of work.

However, that's still an option for a few reasons. Do banks often let FT hires start early also?

I agree, I think it's definitely possible and could get you ahead $$-wise and experience-wise. But don't do it the first day as mentioned. Wait until halfway through at least, and bring it up to the staffer. Just like anything in banking, you'll need to pitch it right. Mention you've gotten ahead in school and want to volunteer abroad, etc. May want to mention the benefit of a lingering intern to them includes the ability to dump grunt work through the Fall (something I definitely missed when the interns left in August)!

This is great, sounds like it's a much more likely possibility than I initially imagined. Will definitely follow the advice in this thread and bring it up around halfway through the internship- thanks for suggesting I bring it up with the staffer, that's something I hadn't thought of yet but would have wondered about when the time comes.

Will mention the benefits of a lingering intern to dump work on haha. Did you say I should mention wanting to volunteer abroad because you think it would sound good? I ask because I just said 'travel' in the OP but my travel plans actually do revolve around a volunteer program abroad.

Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to mention you are volunteering. It can only help your case. I know we gave a kid a one year deferral on starting his 1st year because he was a stellar SA and said he wanted to do microfinance in some 3rd world country for a year after graduating. I imagine we wouldn't have done that if he said he was going to be traveling instead.

Is it just me, or is this a very strange question?

Don't really have a good idea on how to go about it, but I don't see a good reason why you'd want to do it anyways... Can you give more background?

My program ends early August, but if I sign a sublease for the month of August, that will be a huge waste to the rest of the month because I will be going back to school at the end of the month as well.
