Feeling trapped by a single summer of experience

Just struck out in a FT recruiting process and wanted to hear from anyone who has made a similar jump.

I interned at a bank this summer and received a return offer, but ended up in a capital markets / structured products seat after group placement didn’t go my way. I’m hoping to move into coverage or M&A.

The frustrating part is feeling like I’m already being pigeonholed after one summer. Despite getting a return offer, my experience seems to be treated as largely irrelevant for those roles.

Has anyone successfully made this move, either through FT recruiting or after starting as an analyst? What helped you get traction, and did you have more success moving internally or recruiting elsewhere? Does the market need to be warmer for these kinds of moves to work?
