Final Year UG looking for recruiting guidance

Hello everyone,

thank you for taking the time to look at this post, I appreciate any opinions and guidance.

A bit on my situation:
I will now enter my final year of UG at a "T1" UK target  with top grades and am a bit lost regarding what path to pursue for future recruiting. I unfortunately did not land an SA in London for my penultimate year (made lots of mistakes and learned lots) but rather an RX OC in a continental Europe office which the firm ultimately, to my frustration, moved to Q3 2027 instead of 2026 which was what I applied for. As this happened late in the recruitment cycle, I was quite lucky to still find an M&A internship with a smaller boutique that has good dealflow in the same city.

Ultimately, I would like to work in London and ideally also start my career there (M&A or RX). The RX OC is a seat where I believe I could learn tons because they're basically drowning in mandates but working in London is a top priority for a variety of reasons, from personal to professional. If the seat was in London, I wouldn't even think about it as I believe the internship would provide a top notch learning curve.

My current outlook (opinions and advice appreciated!):
From what I understand, the best option for me is to apply to SA 27 as a final year for those banks in London that do accept that, and beyond that try to apply for OCs in London from Q4 2027 onwards with the option of then pursuing a master for 28/29 as a backstop to get access to traditional recruiting pipelines if needed. The alternative here would be to apply for 27/28 masters, however the OC would overlap with start dates in that case. In the case I do get an SA for next summer that is substantially better than the RX OC, I would kindly ask to move that OC to Q4, allowing me to do both internships. I was also thinking of directly asking the RX OC to be moved to Q4 so I am not working behind the firm's back and being transparent about it (also since that would allow me to transparently leverage that offer for SA 27 recruiting). From my experience with HR there, they seemed quite nice about providing the offer holders some flexibility (given this is so far out they haven't even started recruiting for the slot I have the offer for) and I presume asking won't hurt the relationship. How would I frame that request?

I have also heard from my friends in London that their SA classes are actually predominantly filled with final years and masters students which surprised me, is this becoming more normal and accepted by banks?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and sharing your advice - I really appreciate your thoughts as I haven't been able to find relevant information given this situation is a bit unique with the OC offer in a different country...

Regards,
anxious student

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a structured approach to your situation:

1. SA 2027 Applications as a Final-Year Student

  • Many London banks do accept final-year students for Summer Analyst (SA) roles, and it’s becoming increasingly common for SA classes to include final-year undergraduates and master’s students. This aligns with what your friends have observed.
  • Focus on applying to as many SA 2027 roles as possible, especially at banks that explicitly allow final-year students. It’s a numbers game, so aim for at least 10-15 applications to maximize your chances.

2. Leverage Your RX OC Offer

  • Your RX OC offer is a strong asset, even if it’s not in London. Use it strategically during SA recruiting to demonstrate your commitment to the industry and your ability to secure competitive roles.
  • Consider requesting to move the RX OC to Q4 2027. Frame the request professionally, emphasizing your desire to gain additional experience in the interim to bring even more value to the firm. For example:
    • Sample Framing: "I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to join the team and contribute to the firm’s success. Given the timeline, I was wondering if there might be flexibility to adjust the start date to Q4 2027. This would allow me to further develop my skills and experiences, which I believe would enable me to make an even greater impact during my time with the firm."
  • Transparency is key. If the firm is flexible, this could also allow you to pursue a stronger SA opportunity in London without jeopardizing your RX OC offer.

3. Master’s Program as a Backstop

  • Applying for a master’s program at a top UK school (e.g., LBS, LSE, Oxbridge, Imperial, Warwick) is a solid contingency plan. These programs provide access to traditional recruiting pipelines and can significantly enhance your chances of landing a full-time role in London.
  • If you secure an SA 2027 role, you can defer the master’s plan. However, if the RX OC overlaps with master’s start dates, prioritize clarity on timelines before committing to both.

4. Networking and Preparation

  • Networking is less critical in London compared to the US, but it can still yield valuable insights and referrals. Attend events, connect with alumni, and follow up with professionals you meet.
  • Ensure your CV is polished and standardized, and prepare a concise, compelling “Why IB/Why this firm” story. Avoid overcomplicating your preparation—once you meet the minimum threshold, additional effort yields diminishing returns.

5. Key Considerations

  • SA vs. RX OC: If you secure a top-tier SA role in London, prioritize it over the RX OC, as it aligns better with your long-term goal of starting your career in London.
  • Transparency with RX OC: Being upfront about your intentions with the RX OC firm is a good strategy, especially if they’ve shown flexibility in the past.
  • Final-Year SA Acceptance: Yes, it’s becoming more common for final-year students and master’s candidates to fill SA classes, so don’t hesitate to apply.

6. Action Plan

  • Apply broadly to SA 2027 roles in London.
  • Request a Q4 2027 start date for your RX OC, framing it as a professional development opportunity.
  • Consider applying for a master’s program as a backup plan.
  • Network strategically and prepare thoroughly for interviews.

This approach balances your immediate goals with long-term flexibility, ensuring you’re well-positioned for a career in London. Good luck!
