I recently received offers to join CS/BofA/JPM as a summer associate and am curious what groups you would recommend joining, especially as a career switcher (i am seeing a lot of m&a and dont think thats for me). I am a woman too - dont know if that matters but would prefer a group that isnt ALL dudes. thanks!

CS Sponsors
CS Sponsors and BofA Real Estate both have good reputations. I'm not as sure about which groups are tops at jpm
Go to the Real Estate group at either Bofa or JPM, stay away from CS Real Estate group at all cost! The Sponsors group at CS is an all male group, try Global Industrials instead, there are a few females in this group --I have insider knowledge BTW.

The Real Estate groups that I mentioned are known to hire a few females every year. CS RE, however, has a terrible culture according to one of my sources. As for the Retail/Consumer groups, JPM is pretty chill with many females, CS Retail is known as a work life balance group --they hired like four female bankers last summer. Bofa is the same as JPM.

If you look on this site, the top groups for all of those banks have been discussed before. Some of them also talk about culture.

CS Sponsors, BAML RE, BAML LevFin, JPM NatResources, JPM M&A, JPM LevFin, JPM FIG.
Dealbreaker had an article about JPMorgan natural resources having an intern who had a seizure, and the comments basically said JPM Natres had a horrible working environment -- check it out.

BTW CS Sponsors last time I checked had 2 seniors (MD and Director) that were both female. So don't necessarily assume it's all male although the majority of the group is. It's a conservative group though and offers great opportunities even if you decided not to go the typical banking route after 2 years.
JPM Consumer Retail is a good group with several women.
