I actually found it very rare for someone VP+ to drop something completely new in my lap after 8pm and asked me to turn around some type of analysis / thoughtful response first thing in the morning. Associates maybe but yeah fuck what they think (unless it’s confirmed a senior wants that same timeline over Email)

More times than not you get wind of something possibly being due later around 4-5pm as a heads up, then if anything you get a follow up at 8 that we’ll actually need this item the next morning. Or you’re being asked to do something “routine” before a 9am call the next morning that’s been on your calendar for a week.

I say all this to say, yes in the rare case that you get a late night email to turn around a brand new 4 hour analysis by 9AM, you should push back - but more times than not, that’s not really the case. The right answer is: Confirming receipt, by when would you want to review this tomorrow? Unless you have some meeting the next AM, you’d be surprised how many times you have at least to the early afternoon to complete it. Just my 2c

I set a rule in my team that any requests that come in post 7pm and need to be done for the same night / next morning need a detailed justification to the person who is being asked to do the work with me in copy.

Ever since I set that rule, we’ve had only three coming internally over six months (there have been some that come from clients on live deals but that’s life) because things are rarely that urgent, and no one wants to explain to their boss why they planned poorly.

I had one Director who didn’t get with the program and tried to sidestep this and he got fired.
