For those familiar, If I don't get into the Investment Banking Workshop at Indiana, should I transfer to a better school?
Current freshman at Kelley and I'm just a little wary of my chances of breaking into IB without the workshop.
If I don't get in, would I be better off staying at IU or transferring to a better school?
OurLordCramer, sorry there are no responses yet. Maybe one of these topics can point you in the right direction:
I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
Lots of students at IU go into IB even if they aren't in the IBW. I have several friends at Kelley who are going into Goldman, Barclays, Jefferies, etc and non of them are in IBW. IBW kids, while accomplished, are all identical on paper. I wouldn't have gotten my offers (one in IB, others in different industries) without bringing something different to the table. While non-IBW students often have to do a bit more work to get those same positions, they also have the flexibility to look into other fields. You're a freshman, and it's a long time before you start really getting deep into your major classes and full-time job search and you may change your mind. Good luck!
Yeah, so I would say Kelley doesn't necessarily prepare you for these jobs by the time you need to recruit for them. Therefore, most of the kids that end up landing internship opportunities in IB are the ones who self-teach necessary skills. The IBW may help in terms of technical skill for FT recruitment, but it offers no leg-up for technical skills during SA recruitment.
With that said, the IBW has strong connections to alumni in the industry. This advantage can be offset with a little extra work for networking prior to recruitment season.
TL;DR - It is not the end of the world if you don't end up in IBW. Plenty of kids not in the workshop earn great IB jobs. Just put a little more effort in networking and you'll be fine. Alumni already have a strong presence in the industry.
