Getting a lot of “send me your resume” but not a lot of traction yet?

I’ve mainly been networking with MDs, associates, and analysts in a coverage group that’s relevant to my current internship, plus a couple of VPs.

The feedback has generally been very positive. Along the lines of, “You’re probably a stronger candidate than most summer interns.” The issue is that I’m coming from a non-target, I’m a rising senior, and I missed the Summer 2027 IB recruiting cycle.

I’m about four weeks into networking and haven’t gotten much real traction yet. The people I speak with seem genuinely interested and supportive, but it feels like the biggest obstacle is structural/timing-related rather than something they directly control.

Is this normal this early in the process? Or, given my timeline, am I realistically too late for IB recruiting?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is not uncommon, especially given the structural and timing challenges you’ve mentioned. Here’s what you need to know and do:

  1. Timing Challenges: Missing the Summer 2027 IB recruiting cycle puts you at a disadvantage because most banks prioritize candidates who went through their summer analyst programs. Full-time recruiting often hinges on whether summer interns accept return offers, leaving limited spots for external candidates. This structural issue is likely why you’re facing delays despite positive feedback.

  2. Networking Strategy: While it’s great that you’re networking with MDs, associates, and analysts, you might want to focus more on VPs and Directors. These individuals often have more influence over hiring decisions and can advocate for you internally. Additionally, ensure you’re following up consistently with those you’ve already spoken to—persistence is key.

  3. Non-Target Background: Coming from a non-target school means you’ll need to work harder to stand out. Highlight any transaction experience from your current internship, even if it’s at a smaller firm, and emphasize your commitment to breaking into IB. Tailor your resume to showcase relevant skills and achievements.

  4. Action Plan:

    • Expand Your Network: Broaden your outreach to include alumni, boutique firms, and regional banks. These firms may have more flexibility in their hiring timelines.
    • Leverage Timing: Many banks open up full-time roles in late summer or early fall after assessing their summer intern return rates. Keep an eye on these openings and be ready to apply immediately.
    • Be Proactive: If someone asks for your resume, follow up within a week to check if they’ve had a chance to review it or if they can connect you with someone else in their network.
  5. Realistic Expectations: It’s still early in the process, and traction often takes time, especially for non-target candidates. However, if you don’t see progress by late August or early September, you may need to pivot to lateral hiring or other finance roles as a stepping stone.

Keep pushing forward—your persistence and adaptability will be critical in overcoming these challenges.

I also missed the SA cycle. Did several in-person coffee chats and had numerous teams/phone calls with bankers in groups relevant to my internship this summer, but only 3 actually led to something meaningful.

I think I'm going to focus completely now on banks that I have some lead on from networking, and if that doesn't work out, take the return offer from my current internship.
