Getting orders and comments from another analyst

Hi all,

I am a second year analyst at a BB in NYC (ignore the title), recently I have been staffed on a pitch with a 3rd year analyst. It is not very uncommon to staff 2 analysts in projects in my group given a temporary shortage of Associates and VPs, so it is not the first time I have to work with another analyst.

I have always seen Analysts as my peers, my equals. However, this one for some reason is starting to give me orders, give me comments on my work and micro manage my work, when the dude is just one year more senior. I would happily follow all the orders and turn all the comments if this was coming from an associate, but honestly, who the f*** does he think he is?

Has anyone been in a similar situation with an entitled peer? How did you handle it? This guy is starting to get me very pissed.

Would you have the same problem if it was a first year associate that was previously a 2nd year analyst during your first year?

3rd year analysts typically fill the shoes of a first year associate “organizationally”. Even though they do not have the same title, staffers will place them in the associate seat due to the extra year in experience.

Their title may be different, but they are technically no different than an associate (they just didn’t get the promotion - maybe bc they have an exit to PE lined up). I personally would be more upset at a fresh MBA grad ordering me around during their first year at the desk, just my opinion though

A 3rd year analyst is basically an associate. At the end of the day they have more experience and have more responsibility on the work product when it gets sent up the chain. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for him to direct you what to do as long as he’s doing it respectfully.

Put it in this perspective: you’re getting angry at someone with twice the amount of experience you have directing you what to do… I think he’s in the right to lead the workflow.
