You will get a feel during your entire time there.
If you have an internship this summer, you are in good shape. Most of these banks do not want to have to recruit much, if at all on campus this year, or at least as little as they have to in order to keep a relationship with their target schools. Because of that, I think you'll see a higher % of kids get extended (and more kids accept, given market conditions).
Usually they'll bring you in the last day/week and give you a mini performance review, then let you know if you're being given an offer to return or not. That said, I wouldn't be shocked if they wait as long as they can after you leave to extend an offer, to buy them more time to see how much capacity they need.
A few years ago when the market was good HR would tend to tell you on the last day / immediately after the internship. Now they are a bit more cautious and it may take longer. This is general but in my opinion what's really happening.
