Ghosting after interview

I had an interview with a regional office of an EB more than three weeks ago for an off cycle, and they still haven't gotten back to me. I reached out twice, and they only responded to my first email, saying they'll look into it. I guess I am cooked without a doubt, but why would they not tell me? What could be reasons to just leave me hanging? I think it's very unprofessional and quite disrespectful given how much time candidates spend time preparing for interviews.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, ghosting after interviews is unfortunately a common occurrence in the finance industry, including elite boutiques (EBs). While it is unprofessional and frustrating, there are several potential reasons why firms might leave candidates hanging:

  1. "Keeping You Warm" Strategy:
Firms may have extended an offer to another candidate and are waiting for their response. If that candidate declines, you might still be in consideration. This practice is often referred to as "keeping a candidate warm" and is a longstanding, albeit frustrating, recruiting tactic.

  2. Internal Delays or Issues:
There could be internal challenges such as budget constraints, deal pipeline uncertainties, or even key decision-makers being unavailable. These factors can delay hiring decisions, and firms may avoid communicating until they have clarity.

  3. Lack of Professionalism:
As highlighted in WSO threads, ghosting is often attributed to a lack of courtesy or professionalism in the recruiting process. HR teams or hiring managers may not prioritize sending rejection emails, even though it would take minimal effort.

  4. You’re a Backup Candidate:
If you’re not their first choice, they might hesitate to reject you outright in case their top candidate falls through. This can lead to prolonged silence as they wait for other decisions to finalize.

  5. Oversight or Neglect:
Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of poor communication or disorganization within the firm. Emails can get lost, or follow-ups may not be prioritized.

While the lack of communication is undeniably disrespectful, it’s important to remain professional and not take it personally. If you haven’t already, consider sending one final follow-up email to express your continued interest and politely request an update. Beyond that, focus on other opportunities and keep moving forward in your job search.
