Goldman Sachs Lateraling Locations

I have a friend who chose to go his/her summer at Goldman IB in a location other than NYC ( think SF, Chicago, Salt Lake City, Dallas) but goes to an east coast target school. He/She really wants to move to NYC cause all his/her friends from college are there. How hard would it be for him/her to move to NYC? And would it be harder to lateral within Goldman or to switch banks entirely to be in NYC?

Do not ask or tell GS. It will be easy enough to land something at a different bank given school + coming from GS (need return offer though). Start networking around week 3/4.

GS is uniquely shitty about internal mobility, especially between SA and FT. It used to be if you asked at all you were eliminated from a return offer in your SA group, not sure if that is still the case. Even people who are years into their career have trouble moving, just a very political/anti-movement firm. I'd hold the SA offer and wait until the last possible moment to accept it, try to land something else in the meantime. If not, lateral around 1 year.

Also, those locations are not all equal. GS SLC will be pretty impossible to lateral out of for FT, and Houston is also a bit tough to get out of because of the coverage industry there. The other locations shouldn't be a problem.
