Connections, especially at the Partner level, can be incredibly valuable, but they are not a guaranteed ticket to an offer. Based on the most helpful WSO content, networking and strong relationships can help you get your foot in the door, such as securing interviews or even a second look if your performance was borderline. However, once you're in the interview process, your performance typically carries the most weight.

Missing a technical question during a superday isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, as firms often evaluate candidates holistically. If you demonstrated strong behavioral skills, cultural fit, and performed well in other areas, you might still have a chance. That said, a Partner connection could potentially help smooth over minor missteps, but it’s unlikely to override a poor overall performance.

If you haven’t already, it might be worth reaching out to your family member for advice or insight into the process. They might be able to provide guidance or even advocate for you, but remember, their influence will likely be limited to ensuring you’re given fair consideration.

A family connection at that level can definitely help, but it’s not a guaranteed ticket. If your performance was strong overall, a Partner might be able to offer some valuable influence, especially if they can vouch for your character and work ethic. However, if the firm’s process is highly selective, missing a technical could still hurt. Connections can help you get in front of the right people, but they won’t necessarily erase a weak spot in your interview. Ultimately, a solid follow-up and continued networking can help, but focus on improving for next time and don’t rely solely on connections.

Realistically, not a lot now that you’ve already been invited to the formal recruiting process, particularly if your family member is in a division that isn’t the one you’re applying for. Connections like these help the most getting your foot in the door and getting an interview. From there it’s going to be a decision from the people who interviewed you. Just think about it from your family member’s point of view - they’re not going to randomly insert themselves into a recruiting process they’re not involved in.
