GPA and qualifications

Quick question about GPA and IB careers in general. Say you got a 1.0 your first semester of freshman year, then completely turn it around and completely hustle the next few semesters--4.0 GPA, tons of networking, join IB clubs, etc. When the time comes around to apply for internships are you just screwed if your GPA still is not good enough? Or is there any good way to convey to interviewers that one semester is bringing your GPA down.
