Group Placement - Got Cut From My Top Group

To preface this. I understand that I put all my eggs in one basket and this is a decision that I now regret. However, I want to position myself competitively and salvage what I have.

I am an incoming summer analyst currently going through placement at a Bulge Bracket. The group I had spoken to 11 people in cut me. There is another group I am interested in and they have shown some interest in me (4 people from the group have reached out) I like them and I want to demonstrate interest but I am afraid that they have already written me off. What do I do to show them that I am serious? How do I navigate this politically without burning more bridges? How do I say they are my top group without coming across as desperate?

Count yourself as lucky for them even telling you that you were cut. I have seen people put all their eggs in one basket and not be told they were cut long ago and get a shitty group. Not sure how much more time you have for placement but just put all your effort in the 2-3 groups you want and emphasize your interest in them.

How do you make it clear that a certain group is your top choice without putting all of your eggs in one basket like OP? I’m shooting for a competitive group with no alumni

Try to set up more calls and dig in deeper to the industry-specific part of it, rather than just generic 'what's the group like?' questions. Educate yourself on trends in that space and get their take. Know multiple deals the group has done (ideally not just their latest big marquee deal) and ask about it - why did it happen, what made the combination make sense, why did X company sell for such a high multiple and Y company transacted much lower

IMO showing true interest or knowledge of the sector is one of the few ways to stand out and not enough people put in the time/effort to do so

Editing to add that if you can't find much info on a merger, go to Edgar company search and find the S-4 from the merger. There will typically be a HUGE treasure trove of info, sometimes saying how long the two parties have been talking, how many other bidders there were, etc. will be impressive to people if you knew the parties have been talking for 2 years and they beat out 5 other parties, good way to go beyond the press release
