GS IBD Internal Mobility

Anyone have any insights on GS internal mobility within IBD coverage groups (ex. C&R to Industrials). Have heard mixed things. Would appreciate any insights.

Cheers!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, internal mobility within Goldman Sachs (GS) is encouraged, especially for top performers, as part of their professional development strategy. However, the ease of moving between IBD coverage groups, such as from Consumer & Retail (C&R) to Industrials, can vary depending on several factors:

  1. Performance and Networking: GS values strong performers who have built solid relationships within the firm. Networking effectively and forming genuine connections with individuals in the target group can significantly improve your chances.

  2. Timing and Openings: Internal mobility often depends on the availability of roles in the desired group. Turnover at the junior level is relatively high, so opportunities may arise if you stay proactive and maintain communication with the relevant teams.

  3. Challenges: While GS supports mobility, switching between groups within IBD can still be challenging. Some groups may have specific preferences or require additional effort to demonstrate your fit and interest.

  4. Strategy: To improve your chances, focus on building relationships with key individuals in the target group, showcasing your skills, and expressing your interest clearly. Additionally, understanding the culture and expectations of the target group can help you position yourself effectively.

If you’re determined and strategic, internal mobility within GS IBD is achievable, but it requires effort and persistence.

It's easy. eg. GS TMT (both SF and NY) and industrials. They all have a couple of people who lateraled from the Houston Energy group

Pretty sure internal mobility between various IBD not allowed this year. The example you provided would not work, but S&T to IBD would.

Completely untrue, my friend moved from London Industrials to NY TMT last week
