Health Break and now want to Break in

Hey Guys,

Long time reader, first time poster. I am looking to break into M&A, in particular Tech. I studied a quantitative degree at Oxbridge, and graduated well. I have no IB experience. I was aware of IB prep at Uni and secured two internships at a Hedgefund and Asset Manager in my first year. I fell ill, however, and was unable to meet the IB deadlines in second year. I had to delay graduating and take two years out post uni to recoup my health … bummer.

I’m feeling well now and looking to break in - Ideally I’d love MS Tech M&A. I have no SA work and think it may be too late for this cycle. What are people’s opinions, is it possible? I see people from Uni who have done IBD and moved onto HFs / PE and are smashing it in life. I would love to be back on that track. Experience wise, I have worked a sales job for a pharmaceutical company and also work at a tech startup.

What are my ways in and back to the top? I love the action and being in the mix. I think falling ill was a great thing in hind sight - I had this misconception that banking was too hard and other people had easy money - all lies. Everyone, everywhere is working their a** off and it would be a privilege to be a part of a great firm.

Try networking with MS/ BB people, especially HR, to get tailored advice.

Consider non-BB tier.

Consider an MBA (but weigh the risks).

Consider a detour. You are a quant from a top school. That should open some opportunities, which you can later try to leverage for tech M&A.
