Healthcare vertical primers/ readings?
Hey all, recently hit the desk and honestly coming across a lot of KPIs and jargon that I’m not that familiar with within the HC space. Anybody have good resources I can look into in my free time instead of spending a ton of extra time researching everything I come across? Thanks!

Fisher investments has a book series which covers different sectors. It's not tailored to IB and it's a little dated but a lot of it is still relevant in terms of subsector business models, KPIs etc. you can pretty easily find a free pdf of it online. I will say the HC one is good to get a strong background of the sector
Going to check this out
My bank gave our analyst class a bunch of healthcare specific Bank of America primers that were pretty helpful. Not sure if they’re online or you have to pay for them tho
are these something you're allowed to give out? I would love to read up on this.
Have a few primers, feel free to pm
Slightly outdated but fundamentals still stand, the 2012 Deutsche Bank Healthcare Industry primer is very good to those entering although a big read. They have other ones focused on specific verticals also iirc.
Also interested if anyone has HC industry podcast recommendations to add. Already listen to Fierce Pharma/The Topline.
Not hc specific but the acquired podcast has a really awesome episode about Novo Nordisk (Ozempic) that I recently listened to
Where is this primer? Can’t find.
Either have to ask your team if they have a copy somewhere, or go onto your ER provider platform or ask the team you outsource research to if they can find it. Just know it’s from DB, 2012.
Been on the corporate side of healthcare services for 10 years. All my advice is based on my experience in that space.
The annual Bain PE Healthcare reports are a good place to start. Great place to learn headwinds and tailwinds. Things have changed drastically from the late 2010s --> 2020-2021 (COVID mania) --> 2022 and beyond when interest rates rose. They have reports available for every years so worth checking out a report from each of those times.
Would say the best source to catch up to speed in healthcare is to do as much networking / coffee chats with people in the space. Great way to understand the stakeholders and the dynamics of it.
Healthcare is broad, but read SS research (primers and deep dives)
Health Insurance Third Edition, Michael Morrisey, 2020
Very helpful for a complete landscape of the insurance side and does roll over to some of the jargon/material you will encounter, may not be what you are looking for. it is missing some more recent developments in the industry since it is 2020.
Not sure if you’ve heard of this, but if you ask ChatGPT a question it’s pretty good at providing answers
