Help: Do I cancel my vacation planned over 6 months ago?
TL;DR Do I cancel/reschedule my bachelor party so I am not taking time off my third week into an analyst role at a new company?
I am lateraling to a mm boutique in two weeks from a no-name and have had a weekend trip planned for the third week I am at the new job. I planned said trip over 6 months ago and it is for my bachelor party. I would miss a Friday and Saturday and leave Thursday night so it could technically be up to 2.5 workdays time off.
I want to make a good impression and don't want to start out asking my boss for time off immediately, but the trip also means a lot to me as I haven't hung out with my friends since Covid began. From conversations with my boss and hearing about their reputation from others, they are pretty chill and relatively young so I think they'd understand. But then again it is also IB and regardless of the industry I don't think its a good look to instantly go away, even if some of it is over a weekend. The way I see it I have a few options, please help me decide which is best.
1. Ask boss if its okay to go on trip but commit to being available remotely entire time.
2. Don't ask my boss at all and cancel the trip as I want to be a team player and not be out of the office for my third week into the job.
3. Ask if I can fly out Friday night and be back Sunday morning, shortening my trip to roughly 36 hours.
Please help!
Fuck those 3 options. You should prioritize your life and experiences - you only get (usually) 1 bachelor party and the job will still be there when you're back. May be an initial rocky start but the assocs / mid levels who ultimately review will not care about it later if you meet expectations on the job. I would communicate with your team ahead of time, take the full trip and work your ass off when you're back, thank them twice and let them know how much you appreciate their understanding. When you look back in a couple years you're not gonna be thankful you canceled your bachelor party to put in work at an investment bank that doesn't value you, new job or not.
This, OP. Don't miss out on this. I'd let the staffer know before you start; a simple email along the lines of "Looking forward to starting with the team soon. I wanted to let you all know that from x/xx through x/xx I will be out for my bachelor party. This has been planned for over 6 months and I cannot miss or reschedule it as (deposits non-refundable/friends can't reschedule/whatever you want to say here). Let me know of any potential conflicts you see and how we can work to resolve them in advance." should suffice. Don't miss out on this for a job in which you are entirely expendable.
Yes, 100% agree. As long as you disclose beforehand, everyone will be a lot happier than if you tell them a week before.
This is sad that this even got asked. In no way should you cancel your bachelor party for work, or should you offer to be "on call" during this (hopefully) once in a lifetime event.
Edit: Thanks to everyone for the advice. I just spoke with them and was totally in my head about it. They said it is more than fine and I will still be in training during that time so it is no big deal.

Was in similar situation before. I just sounded off all my future vacation plans out for a year when negotiating/accepting the offer so I had it in writing.
