Wow, what firm was this for?
It seems like the recruiting gets earlier every year.. does IB really interview in June 2017 for a Summer 2018 internship?
I would have bs'd them and said you were thrown headfirst into a fire drill about saving a client on your first day, starting a new cost cutting project etc., and throw in some industry language and acronyms to tie it all together.
As for the why not IB story: you wanted to see the inner workings of companies to see what really drives them/strategy, and this will help you when you are on the other side of the table in IB to think more holistically about deals and the industry.
