Help moving to New York

Hey Everyone,

So, a little background about me. I am from an extreme non-target and was able to land a FT role in IBD in NYC. I come from a small town in the south east and moving to NYC is not something people from where I am at do. I don't know anyone from my university moving to NYC and am trying to figure out how to best navigate the move. My family situation is kind of touchy and I will be financing the move with my signing bonus. Will this be enough to get me a place? Where should I look and when should I start looking? Should I reach out to my employer for guidance? I don't have someone to guarantee my lease- will this be an issue?

I'd appreciate any and all help.

It’s been a while since I moved here, so I can only offer disjoint bits of advice: The living situation is solved by living with the roommates - craigslist is your friend there. Do not take your car with you, even if you think you can’t live without one. Whatever you are making is not going to be enough - prepare to feel poor.

I have a friend who lives in the country, and it's supposed to be an hour from 42nd Street. A lie! The only thing that's an hour from 42nd Street is 43rd Street!

Try and find an appartment with no broker fee - when you find roomates try and find something off the no fee websites so that you can find a lower rent. StreetEasy, NakedApartments and such will be helpful. You should do some looking there now to get a sense for the neighboorhoods and what different amounts of money will get you in different neighboorhoods. That's what I'm doing right now ahead of moving in July.
