Urgent Help Needed Over IB Offer
I am set to start an internship at an EB this coming week. My initial graduation date was December 2024. However, since I met all my degree requirements, my school conferred my diploma, making my graduation date this May.
I am unsure how this change could impact my internship and I am worried that they might not let me proceed with it or might not offer a return position because of this. I am seeking advice on what to do.
I have been accepted into my school's MFin program, which I would prefer not to pursue due to the extra time and cost. However, this would allow me to meet my initial graduation date. Alternatively, I could take additional courses to remain "in school."
Should I communicate this change to HR immediately before starting the internship, or wait until it is over and return offers are being discussed? I appreciate any advice.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps and considerations for your situation:
Communicate with HR: It's crucial to inform HR about your change in graduation status. HR's role is to handle such matters, and they can provide guidance on how this might impact your internship and potential return offer. Be respectful and clear about your situation.
Evaluate Your Options:
Timing of Communication: It's generally better to communicate significant changes sooner rather than later. Waiting until the end of the internship might create complications or misunderstandings. Transparency with HR can help you navigate this situation more effectively.
Recruiting Strategy: If your internship is impacted, you may need to start recruiting again. Keep track of your networking efforts and be prepared to reach out to other firms if necessary.
Return Offer Considerations: If you receive a return offer, make sure to clarify the terms and any conditions related to your graduation status. This will help you make an informed decision about your next steps.
By addressing this proactively with HR, you can better understand your options and make decisions that align with your career goals.

I think the most logical thing is to tell HR, and then lay out your options towards them.
Realistically, they probably won't care, and will say some corporate slang for "use your time well". Best chance is that they want you to start earlier.
Overall, I would tell HR, or just pick up a minor in something else. Best of luck champ.
Chill, rest and vest. Take the minimum number of classes possible in the easiest subjects. “Graduate” in Jan and go to the most fun location you can think of. I knew several people who took this path.
So Associate 2 in PE - Other is about to start an internship in banking. Why do you kids do this lol
