Help please!! I want to get into O&G IB
I am currently about to start attending a semi target state school outside of TX. I have heard that the only way into O&G is if you go to TX. Which the only way into that is if you go to a TX state schools or if you go to a top target school. I wanted to see if anyone had any insight into how true this is and if you can get into O&G groups outside of TX. Also would that be easier to get into? For reference I haven’t been able to find any alumni from my school in Texas IB so I figure I don’t have a shot at TX but if anyone has a experience getting in from a similar situation please share how you did it. i have known people from out of state get in. you just need to have a good story on why texas and o&g. houston mainly looks for people that plan to stay in Houston and not leave to NYC after 2 years.
Appreciate your comment!! When you say transfer to NY, does that mean for another IB job. I feel like for most people out of state they would have a better chance going to New York to begin with than going to Houston.
They don’t want people using Houston IB as a stepping stone for NYC IB since technically Houston may be less competitive. Why Houston, why oil and gas are very common and very important interview questions and having no ties to Texas you’ll need a very convincing story but it’s doable
Okay really appreciate it, I always thought Houston was more competitive for out of TX kids than NY. Definitely don’t plan on moving for TX to NY so shouldn’t be a problem explaining why Houston and why oil. Would you say it might be helpful to do an internship at say Exxon or Shell in sales and trading or thing vs going the traditional BB wealth management route?
I have seen kids have success with that because it’s an easy demonstration of interest in energy, not sure how difficult those are to land though
