HKUST Business BBA or Warwick PPE BA

I'm a highschool senior (international for both countries) deciding where to go to uni. I've received offers from both.

I'd much prefer Warwick because it's a target in the UK and because HKUST seems like an irrelevant polytechnic, though I do know it's a target in the China region.

My dad thinks HKUST is the best option by far. He's bullish on the UK economy and anecdotes have convinced him it's easier to win 10 consecutive lotteries than to secure a job in England.

But I've heard that Hong Kong shops like to hire Chinese-speakers though, and I'm a monolingual Anglophone.

Which uni has better prospects? What should I choose?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. Warwick's Strengths:

    • Warwick is a recognized target school in the UK for investment banking and finance roles. Many graduates secure positions in top firms in London, which is a global financial hub.
    • The PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) program is well-regarded and offers a broad skill set that can be valuable in finance, consulting, and other industries.
    • However, as your dad mentioned, securing a job in the UK as an international student can be challenging due to visa restrictions and competition.
  2. HKUST's Strengths:

    • HKUST is a target school in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly for roles in Hong Kong and mainland China. It has a strong reputation in finance and business, especially for its BBA program.
    • While your concern about being a monolingual Anglophone is valid, many international firms in Hong Kong operate in English, and HKUST graduates often secure roles in these companies.
    • If you plan to work in Asia long-term, HKUST might provide better regional networking opportunities and job prospects.
  3. Key Considerations:

    • Location Preference: If you see yourself working in the UK or Europe, Warwick is the better choice. If you aim to build a career in Asia, HKUST aligns more with that goal.
    • Language Barrier: Your lack of Chinese language skills could be a disadvantage in Hong Kong, but it’s not insurmountable if you target international firms.
    • Parental Input: While your dad's perspective is important, your career goals and preferences should take precedence.

Recommendation:

If your long-term goal is to work in the UK or Europe, Warwick is the stronger option due to its target school status and proximity to London. However, if you’re open to building a career in Asia and can leverage HKUST’s strong regional reputation, it could be a great choice. Ultimately, align your decision with where you see yourself working and thriving post-graduation.
