Houston IB Summer Dress Code

Lucky enough to secure a summer associate role at JPM/MS/GS/Citi in Houston.

I assume the dress code is different than NYC potentially.

Would love to hear advice on what to prepare to wear for summer

Cheers

Based on the most helpful WSO content, dress codes in Houston for investment banking summer associates can be slightly more relaxed compared to NYC, but professionalism is still key. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Suits: A suit is generally required for most days, especially in client-facing situations. Stick to classic colors like navy, charcoal, or dark gray. Lighter fabrics (like tropical wool) are ideal for Houston's summer heat.

  2. Ties: While ties are often expected, some offices may allow you to go without one on non-client-facing days. It's best to observe the office culture during your first week.

  3. Shirts: Stick to well-fitted dress shirts in solid colors or subtle patterns. White and light blue are safe choices.

  4. Shoes: Oxfords are a classic choice, but double strap monk shoes and penny loafers are also acceptable. Brown shoes are generally fine in Houston, as the dress code tends to be less rigid than in NYC.

  5. Casual Fridays: If your office observes casual Fridays, business casual attire like dress slacks and a button-down shirt (no tie) is usually acceptable. Avoid jeans unless explicitly allowed.

  6. Weekend Work: For weekend office work, business casual is typically fine unless you're meeting clients.

  7. Facial Hair: Well-groomed facial hair is generally acceptable, but keep it neat and professional.

  8. Preparation: Plan to have at least 2-3 suits, 5-7 dress shirts, and 2-3 pairs of dress shoes to rotate throughout the summer.

Houston's warmer climate and slightly more relaxed culture compared to NYC mean you can prioritize comfort while maintaining a polished, professional appearance. Always err on the side of formality until you're sure of the office norms.
