Houston's reputation carry over to other offices? (Energy-specific)
I've noticed that Houston tends to dominate Oil & Gas coverage in North and South America, while London seems to lead on the international side.
It also seems that firms with strong Houston energy franchises often have strong London franchises as well (e.g., jeff, citi..). Is that because the Houston and London teams work closely together, or does the technical expertise (especially A&D) in Houston help strengthen the quality of advisory work in London?
The firm I'm most curious about is evr. They're widely regarded as one of the strongest advisors for upstream Oil & Gas in Houston, but I haven't seen many standout upstream deals in EMEA from the London office.
Any thoughts on this?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, Houston is indeed recognized as a dominant hub for Oil & Gas (O&G) coverage in the Americas, while London leads internationally. Firms with strong energy franchises in Houston, such as Jefferies and Citi, often have robust London franchises as well. This could be attributed to the following factors:
Collaboration Between Offices: Houston and London teams may work closely together, leveraging their respective regional expertise to provide comprehensive advisory services. This collaboration ensures consistency in technical and strategic approaches across geographies.
Technical Expertise in Houston: Houston's deep technical expertise, particularly in areas like Asset & Divestiture (A&D), likely enhances the overall quality of advisory work globally. This expertise can influence and strengthen the capabilities of other offices, including London.
Regarding Evercore (EVR), it is widely regarded as a top advisor for upstream O&G in Houston, excelling in M&A and restructuring. However, its London office may not have the same level of standout upstream deals in EMEA. This could be due to differences in market dynamics, deal flow, or the specific focus of the London team compared to Houston's upstream specialization.
In summary, while Houston's reputation and expertise can bolster other offices, the strength of a firm's energy franchise in a specific region depends on local market conditions and the team's focus.
